PITTSBORO — Contract crews have put the final touches on the project to improve the iconic traffic circle in downtown Pittsboro.

Barriers have been removed, giving traffic full access to the circle for the first time since the project began last winter.

At least some portion of the circle that carries U.S. 15-501 and U.S. 64 Business through downtown Pittsboro has been closed since work on the $2.4 million construction project began in January. A joint venture between the N.C. Dept. of Transportation and the town, the redesigned circle has functional and aesthetic upgrades and is safer for pedestrians and drivers.

This is the first wave of a broader plan to improve about two miles of U.S. 15-501 in Pittsboro, widening and constructing roadway and streetscape improvements between south of U.S. 64 Business and Powell Place Lane near the bypass. Proceeds from the sale of Build NC bonds are earmarked to pay for $1.5 million of the traffic circle construction.
