Chatham County scores and schedules: Nov. 16 through 22

Here are scores and schedules for Chatham County high school athletics from Monday, Nov. 16 to Sunday, Nov. 22. This story will be updated throughout the week.

Tuesday, Nov. 17

Cross country: Chatham Central’s Kailey Green placed second with 26:06 5K to lead the Bears in a road tri-meet against Uwharrie Charter and North Moore. On the men’s side, Seth Gilliland (fifth place, 21:00) and Parker Crowley (sixth place, 21:03) were Chatham Central’s top finishers. Caroline Austin (third place, 27:00) and Samantha Scott (fourth place, 27:20) were the women’s other top finishers. Uwharrie Charter won both overall meets.

Volleyball: Cedar Ridge swept Northwood 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-23) at home in the season opener for both teams.

Volleyball: Research Triangle ripped off three sets in a row to get past Woods Charter, 3-1, in both teams' season opener. The Wolves won the first set, 25-18, but dropped the final three by scores of 25-15, 26-24 and 25-10.

Junior outside hitter Emi Hutter-DeMarco led Woods Charter with 13 kills, while junior outside hitter and team captain Jana Thompson paced the team with eight serving aces and a 96.2 serving percentage. Junior setter Ada Green had 18 assists for the Wolves.

Wednesday, Nov. 18

Cross country: Northwood’s men took five of the top six spots and first place in a home meet against East Chapel Hill and Orange, while the Charger women logged a second-place finish on an afternoon that functioned as an early senior night and season opener for the school.

In the men’s race, senior Malachi Levy paced a field of 25 with a first-place time of 17:04.78 in the 5K race. The Chargers’ other top finishers were: junior Colin Henry (third place, 17:12.52), senior Glenn Porter (fourth place, 18:09.48) and sophomore Christian Glick (fourth place, 18:20.31).

In the women’s race, junior Caroline Murrell (third place, 19:39.47) and senior Tessa Yell (fourth place, 20:53.20) were the Chargers’ top finishers. Northwood finished first in the men’s race with 19 points and second in the women’s race with 36.

Cross country: Research Triangle swept Chatham Charter in a dual meet in Siler City. Brandon McKoy placed second in the men's race with a 17:38 time, and Meredith Reece (10th place, 28:37) was the top women's finisher.

Volleyball: Chatham Central opened its season with a 3-0 road loss to Southern Lee (25-18, 25-10, 25-21). Junior Lindsey Johnson had three kills, and senior Tanner Little had three serving aces.

Thursday, Nov. 19

Cross country: Chatham Central’s men’s logged a first-place finish in a home meet against Albemarle and South Davidson while Kailey Green scored a first-place finish on the women’s side. For the men, Parker Crowley (third place, 19:49) and Seth Gilliland (fourth place, 20:01) were the top finishers; the men also recorded six of the meet’s final top-10 times. Behind Green (25:22) on the women’s side, Chatham Central’s Caroline Austin finished second and Samantha Scott finished third.

Volleyball: Opening its season at home, Chatham Charter swept Research Triangle 3-0 in a match that was closer than it looked. The Knights won 25-22, 25-20 and 26-24. Top performers included: Alison Perez (15 assists), Molly Wilson (16 assists), Emerson Clark (nine kills, eight digs, eight serve points, four aces) and Morgan Lineberry (12 digs, seven serve points).

Volleyball: Chatham Central got back on track in its home opener, sweeping North Moore 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15) in a non-conference match. Senior Grace Jones and junior Taylor Poe had 10 kills each, while senior Savannah Stillwell had seven solo blocks for the Bears (1-1).

Volleyball: Jordan-Matthews opened its season with a 3-0 road loss to Eastern Randolph. The Jets dropped the first set 25-13 but played the final two much tighter — losing 25-22 and 26-24, respectively.

Volleyball: Northwood didn’t have any trouble in its home opener/senior night. The Chargers breezed past conference rival Southern Durham in a 3-0 sweep (25-3, 25-5, 25-7) to move to 1-1 on the year.

Volleyball: Woods Charter put up a fight against conference rival Cornerstone Charter — tying the Cardinals at one set apiece on the road — before dropping the next two sets and losing 3-1. The Wolves are now 0-2, with both losses coming on the road.

Friday, Nov. 20

Volleyball: Chatham Charter won a tight first set 26-24 on the road but dropped the next three — 25-15, 28-26, 25-10 — in a loss to conference foe Cornerstone Charter of Greensboro. The Knights ended the week at 1-1. Top performers included: Molly Wilson (24 assists), Emerson Clark (12 kills, 10 digs, 10 serve points) and Breanna Spinks (eight kills, 10 digs).
