Chatham County scores and schedules: Dec. 7 through 13

Here are scores and schedules for Chatham County high school athletics from Monday, Dec. 7 to Sunday, Dec. 13. This story will be updated throughout the week.

Tuesday, Dec. 8

Volleyball: Providence Grove swept Jordan-Matthews (25-9, 25-13, 25-6) in Franklinville.

Volleyball: Playing in its first match since Nov. 20, Chatham Charter was swept (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) on the road against conference foe Research Triangle.

Volleyball: Cornerstone Charter of Greensboro swept Woods Charter, 3-0, in Chapel Hill. The Wolves — who won their first match of the season last week — dropped to 1-3. Junior Emi Hutter-DeMarco had nine kills and 11 digs; junior Ada Green had 12 assists.

Volleyball: Northwood was credited with a conference win after Vance County forfeited the match.

Wednesday, Dec. 9

Cross country: For the second time this season, Research Triangle swept Chatham Charter in a home dual meet. Juniors Caleb Kolb and Brandon McKoy finished second and third, respectively, in the men’s race. Meredith Reece paced the Knight women with a ninth-place finish.

Cross country: Woods Charter sophomores Wiley Sikes (19:28) and Maddie Sparrow (22:06) logged first-place finishes in the men’s and women’s five-kilometer races, respectively, in a home dual meet in Chapel Hill against Cornerstone Charter. The Cardinals won both races on team points.

Cross country: Less than a week after falling to Chapel Hill at home, Northwood got a big win over its conference rival (plus host school Cedar Ridge) in a road tri-meet. Caroline Murrell (first place, 20:45.02) and Tessa Yell (second place, 21:36.14) led the way in the women’s race, while Colin Henry (first place, 17:29.31) and Malachi Levy (second place, 18:18.32) led the men’s race. The Chargers beat out the Tigers and Red Wolves in team scores in both races, too.

Cross country: Jordan-Matthews had another solid showing in the PAC 7 2A Conference, as the Jets swept Randleman, Eastern Randolph and T.W. Andrews in a road quad-meet. Robert Train finished first in the men’s race (20:05), and Jasmine Basilio (28:23) finished first in the women’s race.

Volleyball: Chatham Central dropped to 3-4 on the season after a 3-1 road non-conference loss at North Carolina Leadership Academy of Kernersville. The Bears won the first set 25-17 but dropped the next three (25-21, 25-22 and 26-24) in a tight loss. Senior Savannah Stilwell (eight kills, six blocks) had a strong match for Chatham Central.

Thursday, Dec. 10

Cross country: Kailey Green (ninth place, 25:09) paced the Chatham Central women in the Yadkin Valley 1A conference women’s meet. Green was named all-conference for the second season in a row and also qualified for the NCHSAA 1A Mideast Regional in January.

Volleyball: Jordan-Matthews moved to 2-3 on the season with a 3-0 sweep of T.W. Andrews on the road.

Volleyball: In an in-county matchup of Central Tar Heel 1A Conference rivals, Chatham Charter beat Woods Charter 3-1 (25-11, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) in Siler City. Senior Morgan Lineberry had eight kills and five aces for the Knights.

Volleyball: Undefeated Cedar Ridge swept Northwood 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-18) in Pittsboro. Freshman Asia Thigpen (15 kills), junior Hannah Forbes (seven kills, 19 digs) and junior Ainsley Fauth (eight blocks, 12 assists) were standouts for the Chargers, who are now 3-4.

 Volleyball: Chatham Central got back to .500 with a three-set sweep of South Davidson on the road (25-12, 25-12, 25-10). Senior Grace Jones had 10 kills and four aces.

Friday, Dec. 11

Cross country: Senior Parker Crowley (ninth place, 18:59) and freshman Seth Gilliland (11th place, 19:05) were the top finishers for Chatham Central’s men in the Yadkin Valley 1A conference meet hosted at South Davidson. Crowley and Gilliland both earned all-conference and qualified for the mideast regional next month, too.

Volleyball: Northwood logged perhaps its signature win of 2020, sweeping Orange 3-0 at home (25-19, 25-20, 25-21). The Panthers entered the match 4-2; with the win, the Chargers moved to 4-4.
