Chatham County scores and schedules: April 26 through May 2

Here are scores and schedules for Chatham County high school athletics from Monday, April 26 to Sunday, May 2. This story will be updated throughout the week.

Monday, April 26

Baseball: The Chatham Central men were shut out by the Lee County Yellow Jackets, 9-0, in their season-opener on the road. The only hit from the Bears came off of the bat of senior Brady Cunnup (1-for-3).

Golf: Jordan-Matthews at PAC 7 Conference opponents, 11 a.m.

Soccer: The Jordan-Matthews women dropped a lopsided game to the conference-leading Wheatmore Warriors, 10-1, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy. The Jets are now 5-5 on the season (5-2 in the PAC 7, both losses coming to Wheatmore). Scoring the lone goal for the Jets was freshman Iris Sibrian Zetino.

Soccer: The Northwood women lost a close road game to the East Chapel Hill Wildcats, 1-0, dropping their record to 7-5 on the season.

Softball: The Jordan-Matthews women lost a road game to the Wheatmore Warriors, 7-3, to drop their record to 5-8 on the season. Leading the Jets on the night were freshmen Logan Gunter (2-for-3, HR, BB,  RBI) and Hannah Mitchell (2-for-4, RBI).

Tennis: The Chatham Central men swept the South Davidson Wildcats, 9-0, to finish the regular season with an unblemished 9-0 record.  All of the Bears won their singles matches, including senior Jayden Gilliland (6-1, 6-0), senior Preston Cox (6-0, 6-0), junior Colby Williamson (6-0, 6-0), freshman Jacob Gilliland (6-0, 6-0), senior Caleb Webster (6-3, 4-6, 10-3) and senior Pacen Dunn (6-0, 6-0). Chatham Central's three doubles teams — Jayden Gilliland & Cox (8-1), Webster & Dunn (8-1) and senior Sidney Cheek & senior Rowan Moore (8-4) — won their matches, as well.

Tennis: The Jordan-Matthews women were swept by the Trinity Bulldogs in their season-opener, 9-0.

Tennis: The Northwood men were swept by the East Chapel Hill Wildcats, 9-0, losing all of their singles and doubles matches. The Chargers are now 3-8 on the season.

Tennis: The Northwood women swept the Cedar Ridge Fighting Red Wolves in their season-opener, 9-0.  Winning their singles matches were senior Courtney Fisher (6-0, 6-3), senior Suzanne Earnshaw (6-0, 6-0), junior Julia Earnshaw (6-4, 6-2), sophomore Destyn Rader (6-2, 7-5) and freshman Evelyn Atkins (6-0, 6-1). Earning doubles victories were the duos of Suzanne Earnshaw & Fisher (8-1) and Rader & senior Katie Foye (8-3).

Track & Field: Jordan-Matthews at Western Guilford, 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 27

Baseball: The Jordan-Matthews men earned a dominant season-opening victory against the T.W. Andrews Red  Raiders, 16-4. Leading the Jets on the night were sophomore Mason Phillips (2-for-2, BB, 3 RBI), senior Cody Spohn (1-for-3, BB, 2 RBI) and senior Huston Causey (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI).

Baseball: The Northwood men lost their season-opening game to the Cedar Ridge Fighting Red Wolves, 8-2. Leading the Chargers on the night were junior Mason Bae (1-for-1, 3 BB) and sophomore Zach Barnes (1-for-4, RBI; 5.0 IP, 2 H, ER, 3 Ks).

Golf: Chatham Central vs. Yadkin Valley Conference opponents at North Stanly, 11 a.m. (Yadkin Valley Conference championships)

Soccer: The Woods Charter women won their game against the North Moore Mustangs, 4-1, to improve to 7-3 on the season.

Softball: The Chatham Central women suffered their largest loss of the season against the Providence Grove Patriots, 9-2, dropping their record to 8-2 on the season. 

Softball: The Chatham Charter women lost a close one to the Bethany Community School Wolves, 3-2, dropping their record to 7-3 on the season. Leading the Knights were junior Olivia Cheek (2-for-3, 2B) and senior Morgan Lineberry (1-for-2, 2B). Senior pitcher Sydney Bowman also racked up 14 strikeouts in 7 innings pitched.

Softball: The Northwood women lost their rematch with the East Chapel Hill Wildcats, 10-8, dropping their record to 7-6 on the season. Leading the Chargers on the day were sophomore Susanna Lee (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI), sophomore Zoe Hatzidakis (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and senior Caroline Dorshimer (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI).

Tennis: The Jordan-Matthews men went 0-3 on matches in the PAC 7 Conference Tournament, with the duos of senior Kevin Hernandez & sophomore Robert Huang and sophomore Buck Thornton & senior Christian Campechano in doubles and senior Michael Ortiz in singles all losing in the first round.

Wrestling: Chatham Central vs. Southern Alamance, 6 p.m.

Wrestling: The Northwood men defeated the Cedar Ridge Fighting Red Wolves in their season-opening match, 40-36, to improve to 1-0 on the season.

Wednesday, April 28

Baseball: The Chatham Charter men trounced Ascend Leadership Academy, 14-0, in their season-opener. Leading the Knights was senior Jacob Brannon (2-for-4, 4 RBI) and senior pitcher Trevor Golden, who threw a five-inning no-hitter (0 ER, 12 K). 

Soccer: The Jordan-Matthews women fell to the Providence Grove Patriots, 4-3, in a crucial home conference game. With the loss, the Jets fall to 5-6 and end their chances at securing a wild card playoff spot. Leading J-M on the night were senior Jennifer Parroquin-Vallejo (2 goals) and sophomore Michelle Parroquin-Vallejo (1 goal).

Soccer: The Northwood women earned a dominant clean sheet victory over the Vance County Vipers in their regular-season finale, 9-0, to finish the season at 9-5. Scoring for the Chargers were senior Imagene Cooke (2 goals, 2 assists), freshman Sienna Gray (2 goals) and senior Bella Cacciato, junior Hanna Randall, junior Emily Carlin, sophomore Sydney Cox and sophomore Sarah Emrich, each with 1 goal.

Softball: The Jordan-Matthews women lost their season finale to the Providence Grove Patriots, 12-1, to finish the year with a 5-9 overall record. Leading the Jets on the night were freshman Hannah Mitchell (1-for-2, BB, RBI) and freshman Logan Gunter (2-for-2).

Softball: The Northwood women finished their regular season with a comeback victory over the Vance County Vipers, 12-11. Down by 3 runs, the Chargers scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to earn the walk-off win. Leading the Chargers on the night were senior Erika Seils (3-for-5, 2 2B, 4 RBI) and sophomore Carlee Harris, 3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI).

Thursday, April 29

Baseball: The Chatham Central men avenged their season-opening loss to the Lee County Yellow Jackets, earning an 8-6 victory to improve to 1-1 on the year. Leading the Bears on the night were sophomore Hasten T. Paige (1-for-4, 3 RBI), junior Luke Oldham (4 BB, 2 RBI) and junior Collin Lagenor (2 BB, 2 RBI).

Baseball: The Jordan-Matthews men earned their second-straight lopsided victory over the T.W. Andrews Red Raiders, 20-2, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Soccer: The Jordan-Matthews women earned a close victory over the Woods Charter Wolves, 2-1, scoring both of their goals in the second half. Scoring for the Jets were freshman Iris Sibrian Zetino and senior Litzy Martinez, each with 1 goal. The Jets finish their season with a 6-6 record.

Softball: The Chatham Central women won a defensive battle against the Gray Stone Day Knights, 1-0, to improve to 9-2 on the season.

Tennis: The Chatham Central men faired well on day 2 of the Yadkin Valley Conference Tournament, capturing the doubles championship and having a player finish third in the singles tournament. The duo of Jayden Gilliland & Preston Cox didn't lose a game throughout the entire tournament, winning the doubles title after a semifinals match against Uwharrie Charter's Drew Auman & Carson Duggins (6-0, 6-0) and a finals match against North Stanly's Kaleb Burrage & Judson Busch (6-0, 6-0). It was the school's first-ever conference championship win in men's tennis. Bears junior Colby Williamson lost in the singles semifinals against Uwharrie Charter sophomore Conner Kelly (6-1, 6-2), but won the third-place match against North Stanly freshman Ameno Morgan (6-1, 6-3).

Track & Field:  Chatham Central vs. YVC opponents, 4:30 p.m.

Track & Field: Jordan-Matthews at Wheatmore, 4:30 p.m.

Track & Field: Northwood and Woods Charter both had a strong showing at the Big Eight Tri-Meet, hosted by East Chapel Hill. The Northwood women finished second as a team (28 points), with the following athletes winning their respective events: junior Charlotte Cantrell (first place, girls 100-meter dash, 13.02), junior Caroline Murrell (first place, girls 3200-meter run, 11:06.00), senior Liv Riggsbee (first place, girls discus throw, 84-02) and junior Kennedy Poston (first place, girls shot put, 28-04.50). The Woods Charter women finished third as a team (7 points), with no first-place finishers. The Northwood men also placed second as a team (24 points), with the following athletes winning their respective events: sophomore Christian Glick (first place, boys 1600-meter run, 4:48.00), senior Malachi Levy (first place, boys 3200-meter run, 10:12.00) and sophomore Jack Nicholson (first place, boys long jump, 20-01.00). The Woods Charter men finished in third place as a team (22 points) with the following athletes winning their respective events: senior Wilfred Charbonneau (first place, boys 400-meter dash, 52.61) and junior Peter Ising (first place, boys discus throw, 85-06).

Wrestling: Jordan-Matthews vs. T.W. Andrews and Eastern Randolph, 5 p.m.

Wrestling: Northwood vs. Vance County and Southern, 6 p.m.

Friday, April 30

Softball: The Chatham Central women earned a shutout win over the South Davidson Wildcats, 8-0, to finish the regular season with a 10-2 record.

Softball: The Chatham Charter women earned an 8-2 victory over the North Moore Mustangs to finish the regular season at 8-3.

Wrestling: Chatham Central at Asheboro, 6 p.m.
